Very Simply ... We are disposing of an Estate from a long-time Stamp Dealer.
This Dealer acquired many iconic items from the James Depew Collection.  Mr. Depew was known to philatelists as the preeminent collector of imperforate and early coil issues.  His collection was sold by Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries
    TM
over multiple sales.  Mr. Depew set the standard for
    imperforate and early coil issues.
This Dealer was fortunate to acquire many key pieces from the Depew Collection.  Mr. Depew collected only the finest items and unusual showpieces from these two focus areas of specialty.  While he collected both used and mint stamps, he especially treasured quality used stamps.  Typically, quality used examples of early stamps are quite scarce because of their condition after usage in the mails, being removed from the cover without damage and then collected, sold or traded over many decades.  It is really a challenge to find highly graded used examples.  Mr. Depew accepted and met this challenge.  If you collect or exhibit
imperforate and early coil issues, especially varieties, paste-up pairs, etc., this is a truly exceptional collection from which to acquire expertized items from.
THE FASCINATING STORY OF COIL PASTE-UP PAIRS
The production of the first coil stamps
, dating in the United States from 1908, began with the flat-plate-press printing of normal stamp sheets
which contained the standard 400 images. The sheets were then gummed, perforated in one direction only, and cut in the other direction into twenty strips consisting of twenty stamps apiece. Strips would subsequently be pasted together to produce coils of 500 or 1000 stamps.
At each join, the paper from the end of one strip would overlap the beginning of the next (the overlap is termed a "paste-up tab"). A pair of stamps that straddles the join is known as a
    paste-up pair
. Paste-Up pairs with either Plate Numbers or Plate Markings on the 'paste-up' tab are exceedingly scarce and highly collectable.
    T
he condition of the stamp is exceptionally well noted on the Cert.  We have posted a scan of the certificate as well as an ultra high-definition (1200 x 1200) scan of the
front and back of the actual stamp
    .
